Aerial Bundled Cables (also aerial bundled conductors)

Are overhead power lines using several insulated phase conductors bundled tightly together, usually with a bare neutral conductor. This contrasts with the traditional practice of using un-insulated conductors separated by air gaps.

Advantages

  • Relative immunity to short circuits caused by external forces (wind, fallen branches), unless they abrade the insulation.
  • Can stand in close proximity to trees and will not generate sparks if touched.
  • Simpler installation, as crossbars and insulators are not required.
  • Less cluttered appearance.
  • Can be installed in a narrower right-of-way.
  • Reduced transmission losses (on AC lines), due to closer spacing of the conductors
  • At junction poles, insulating bridging wires are needed to connect non-insulated wires at either side. ABC can dispense with one of these splices.

Application

Aerial Bunched Cables can be conveniently used:

  • As replacement of bare lines in Rural Areas, in woods and in other localities & narrows streets where the space limited
  • As replacement of bare lines where reliability of supply is of prime importance.
  • As replacement of bare lines where high degree of stability of supply voltage is of importance.
  • In hilly terrains where cost of erection of overhead lines or under ground cable becomes very high.
  • As reinforcement of existing system without increasing voltage.
  • For temporary supplies.

XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene)

The XLPE insulation is black in colour and is stabilized against deterioration caused by exposure to direct sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. XLPE is cross-linkable low-density polyethylene, which is made thermo set by special formulation from base polymer of thermoplastic low-density polyethylene. XLPE combines the best electrical properties of LDPE and superior thermo mechanical properties.

Halogen Free Fire Retardant Cables

Have materials which reduce smoke and corrosive gas emissions in fire compared with P.V.C.

They are normally used as sheathing compounds over XLPE insulation, and can give considerable safety advantages in situations where numbers of people may have to be evacuated in the event of fire.

  • HFFR meets international technical requirements, specifically with respect to mechanical properties and flame retardation,
  • HFFR has good process ability, both during the compounding and extrusion
  • HFFR is very cost competitive
